Categories of members of the personnel

The members of the personnel (MP) shall be divided into

Employed members of the personnel (MPE) Under the sole authority of the Director-General, employed members of the personnel perform the functions entrusted to them in return for remuneration by the Organization. The Organization takes the necessary measures to ensure that they benefit from adequate social insurance cover.
Staff members (STAFF) shall be appointed by the Director-General to a post within the Organization.
Fellows (FELL) are graduates of a higher educational establishment, typically with a maximum of ten years’ relevant professional experience. They are appointed by the Director-General for a limited period of time to perform functions within the Organization as part of their professional development.
   
Associated members of the personnel (MPA) Associated members of the personnel (MPA) are not employed by the Organization but are appointed by the Director-General on the basis of a contract of association.
Associates for the purpose of international collabortion (MPAc) They are appointed as participants in a collaboration, based on an agreement between the Organization and their home institution. The home institution shall be either the employer, the educational establishment in which they are enrolled, a funding body expressly recognized as such by the Organization or a body equivalent to any of the foregoing, expressly recognized as such by the Organization.
Users shall be scientists, engineers or technicians, as well as their administrative support personnel, sent to the Organization as members of a Visiting Research Team to contribute to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, operation, upgrade or analysis of an experiment or similarly organized project under a Memorandum of Understanding or equivalent agreement with their home institution.
Cooperation Associates (COAS) shall be scientists, engineers or technicians, as well as their administrative support, admitted by the Organization to contribute on behalf of their home institution to the execution of a collaboration under an agreement between the Organization and their home institution.
Project Associates (PJAS) shall be scientists, engineers or technicians admitted by the Organization to contribute their expertise on behalf of their home institution to the execution of projects chosen by the Director-General under an agreement between the Organization and their home institution. They shall be employed by their home institution. The maximum duration of the contract of association as a Project Associate shall be three years.
Associates for the purpose of exchange of scientists (MPAx) They shall be appointed on the basis of an individual invitation in order to promote exchanges in the fields of science and technology, subject to the consent of their home institution. They shall continue to be employed by their home institution, which must be a research institution. The home institution requirement may be waived in exceptional circumstances by the Director-General in respect of a Visiting Scientist or a Guest Professor in receipt of a retirement pension.
Scientific Associates (SASS) They shall be appointed on the proposal of a selection committee to participate in the Organization’s scientific exchange programme. The initial duration of their contract of association, and any renewal or extension thereof, shall not exceed one year. The maximum duration of the contract of association of a Scientific Associate shall be two years. In exceptional cases, the Director-General may decide to extend the contract of association of a Scientific Associate for a third year.
Corresponding Associates (CASS) They shall be appointed on the proposal of a selection committee to participate in the Organization’s corresponding exchange programme. The maximum duration of the contract of association of a Corresponding Associate shall be six months in any twelve-month period.
Visiting Scientists (VISC) They shall be appointed on the basis of an invitation by a Head of Department to participate in the activities of that department. The initial duration of their contract of association, and any renewal or extension thereof, shall not exceed one year.
Guest Professors (GPRO) shall be eminent scientists appointed on the basis of an invitation by the Director-General. The initial duration of their contract of association, and any renewal or extension thereof, shall not exceed one year. The maximum duration of the contract of association of a Guest Professor shall be two years. However, in exceptional cases, the Director-General may decide to renew or extend the contract of association of a Guest Professor beyond this duration.
Associates for the prupose of training (MPAt) They shall be appointed on the basis of an individual invitation in order to supplement their education or to obtain professional experience, subject to the consent of their home institution. The home institution shall be the educational establishment in which they are enrolled or, in the case of Trainees only, a funding body recognized as such by the Organization.
Students (ADMI, TECH, DOCT, SUMM) must be pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in a field related to an activity of the Organization and shall be appointed under the Organization’s student programmes. The initial duration of their contract of association, and any renewal or extension thereof, shall not exceed one year. The maximum duration of the contract of association of a Student shall be as specified for the relevant student programme.
Trainees (TRNE) shall be appointed on the basis of an invitation by a Head of Department to participate in the activities of that department in order to gain practical work experience. The maximum duration of the contract of association of a Trainee shall be six months in any 12-month period, unless their traineeship is awarded pursuant to an agreement between the Organization and a government funding agency, in which case the maximum duration of their contract of association shall be two years.
Apprentices (APPR) are appointed by the Director-General for a limited period of time in order to pursue an apprenticeship in a technical or administrative field within the Organization, for the purposes of acquiring a professional qualification in accordance with the legislation and practice of the Republic and Canton of Geneva...
